Labyrinth Ceremonies

Since the labyrinth is sacred space, the power of ritual is enhanced there. The function of sacred space, and the labyrinth, and ritual, is connection.
—from Exploring The Labyrinth, by Melissa West

The labyrinth is an ancient circuit path with one way in and one way out. They have been found all over the world throughout history: laid in marble in churches, created from stones in fields, mowed into tall grasses, painted on canvas, drawn in sand. People walk the labyrinth in a quiet form of meditation, or dance it in jubilant celebration, or follow each other through it in thoughtful community, or enter it as a journey.

Walking the labyrinth’s repetitive and curving path uses the right brain, and awakens our creative and intuitive side. Some people have experienced great waves of emotion while in the labyrinth, while others simply enjoy concentrating on the process. It is a beautiful way to slow down a bit and find some moments of peace.

Labyrinths are wonderful places for ceremonies. In a coming of age ceremony, parents can enter first, lighting the way with a candle, and the young adults can follow, meeting them in the center for a blessing. Wedding anniversaries can be celebrated by entering the labyrinth and offering your original vows (or new ones!) to each other in the center. Families and friends can walk the labyrinth together for celebration or healing.
